Automatic system for food waste assessment at households is part of the Wasteless EU project. Its goal is to establish new ways of measuring the food waste at homes. Traditional methods are often imperfect as they rely on surveys and manual data collection. A tool equipped with weight sensors and a microcontroller was developed and is ready to be connected to a mobile app (Wasteless scale) for data collection. Each attendee will receive the scale and the access to mobile app for the period of the experiment.

In order to use Wasteless Scale tool, an Andorid mobile app is needed. The app is available at Google play.

The app offers a unique approach for tracking food waste for research purposes and is exclusively available to participants of a survey and cannot be used without Wasteless scale.

How to participate

You can send your interest to: wasteless@ijs.si

Place the waste on the scale, categorise it with the app, take a photo for documentation and contribute valuable statistics.

Using the tool is simple:

1. Open the mobile app.
2. Select the language and Connect the scale with the app via Bluetooth (click on the scale name, “Wasteless_XX”)
3. Verify the history and Place the plate on the scale.
4. Position your mobile phone on the designated stand.
5. Start a new waste measurement session: Weigh and Categorize. Ensure the scale is tared.
6. Add data and Send them to the database.
